SS27: Innovation, institutions and the geography of the economic system

Description

This special session will explore how innovation processes shape and are shaped by the institutions and the economic system in which the innovation processes operate. In particular, the session will examine how the economic geography of a country or region influences the innovation activities evident there and the ways in which innovation processes and outcomes differ in different types of places. We are seeking a range of papers of either a quantitative, a qualitative, or a mixed-methods nature.  

The types of issues on which we would welcome submissions include, but are not limited to: 

  • The role which urban scale and structure play in driving innovation 
  • The role which regional characteristics, including industry patterns and human capital distributions, play in shaping the types of innovation locally present 
  • The links between innovation and productivity at the local and regional levels 
  • The role which governance systems and institutional structures play in shaping innovation 
  • The factors influencing knowledge diffusion across regions and cities  
  • The key institutional and governance blockages and bottlenecks to innovation and innovation diffusion 
  • The role which short-termism and long-term thinking play in shaping different types of innovation  
  • The role which institutional alignment plays in fostering innovation and/or productivity 
  • Comparative analyses of different national or international innovation-governance systems 
  • The role of civil society in fostering innovation and productivity 
  • How public-private partnerships can help to foster innovation and/or productivity 
  • The role of SMEs or MNEs in driving innovation at the national and regional levels 
  • Modern regional innovation policy
